چکیده

COVER Young whooping cranes (Grus americana) follow an ultralight aircraft. Each year, endangered whooping cranes are reared in captivity and artifi cially trained by ultralight aircraft on their fi rst lifetime migration from Wisconsin to Florida. Analyses of data from subsequent unaided migration events show that migratory performance improves over many years and that social learning from older birds plays an important role. See page 999.

Accelerating and Enhancing Rendering of Realistic Ocean Scenes

Modeling and rendering realistic ocean scenes has been investigated by many researchers in the past few years, providing different models of ocean waves, finescale details, and lightwater interactions. This paper describes a practical data structure for accelerating raymarching for a wellknown wave model defined as a sum of trochoids waves. This data structure exhibits nice properties that ...

A Data Management Strategy for the Ocean Exploration Program

In implementing the vision described in the 2000 Report of the Presidents Panel on Ocean Exploration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration (OE) has sponsored pathfinding ocean exploration expeditions in 2001 and 2002. Emerging large and diverse data sets from these expeditions and future missions warrant a robust data management capability to pr...

Accelerating the Requirement Space Exploration through Coarse-Grained Parallel Execution

The design and analysis of complex systems need to determine suitable configurations for meeting requirement constraints. The Monotonic Indices Space (MIS) method is a useful approach for monotonic requirement space exploration. However, the method is highly time and memory-Consuming. Aiming to the problem of low efficiency of sequential MIS method, this paper introduces a coarse-grained parall...

Did changes in the Subpolar North Atlantic trigger the recent mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet?

The Greenland Ice Sheet's (GIS) contribution to sea level rise more than doubled in the last seven years due to a surprisingly rapid (and unpredicted) mass loss. The loss was not so much a result of increased surface melt but, rather, of ice loss due to the widespread and nearly-simultaneous acceleration of several outlet glaciers in Greenland’s western and southeastern sectors [Rignot and Kana...

Accelerating Design Space Exploration∗

The size of search spaces in embedded system design is one of the most critical problems during design space exploration. Pareto-Front Arithmetics (PFA) has shown to be useful to overcome this problem by decomposing a hierarchical search space and just exploring each part of the system separately. Later, the exploration results are combined at higher levels of the hierarchy. In order to decreas...
